🛒 Ingredients (Serves 4)
For the Patties
-
1 lb (450 g) ground beef
-
¼ cup breadcrumbs
-
¼ cup milk
-
1 small onion, finely chopped
-
1 egg
-
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
-
½ teaspoon garlic powder
-
½ teaspoon salt
-
¼ teaspoon black pepper
For the Onion Gravy
-
2 tablespoons butter
-
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
-
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
-
2 cups beef broth
-
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
-
Salt and pepper to taste
Optional garnishes: chopped parsley
🔪 Step 1: Prepare the Patties
-
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
-
Mix gently until combined — do not overmix (keeps patties tender).
-
Shape mixture into 4 oval patties, about ¾–1 inch thick.
🔥 Step 2: Brown the Patties
-
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
-
Add a little oil or butter to the pan.
-
Brown patties 3–4 minutes per side until a crust forms.
-
Remove patties from skillet and set aside (they do not need to be fully cooked — they’ll finish in the gravy).
🧅 Step 3: Make the Onion Gravy
-
In the same skillet, add 2 tablespoons butter.
-
Sauté sliced onions over medium heat until soft and golden (5–7 minutes).
-
Sprinkle flour over onions, stirring constantly for 1–2 minutes to cook the flour.
-
Gradually add beef broth, whisking to remove lumps.
-
Stir in Worcestershire sauce and season with salt and pepper.
-
Bring to a gentle simmer; gravy will thicken slightly.
