Homemade Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy

🥩 Homemade Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy

Classic Salisbury steak is made from seasoned ground beef patties, seared to perfection, and smothered in a savory onion gravy. Serve with mashed potatoes or rice for a hearty meal.

🛒 Ingredients (Serves 4)

For the Patties

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef

  • ¼ cup breadcrumbs

  • ¼ cup milk

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 1 egg

  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

For the Onion Gravy

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced

  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Optional garnishes: chopped parsley

🔪 Step 1: Prepare the Patties

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

  2. Mix gently until combined — do not overmix (keeps patties tender).

  3. Shape mixture into 4 oval patties, about ¾–1 inch thick.

🔥 Step 2: Brown the Patties

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.

  2. Add a little oil or butter to the pan.

  3. Brown patties 3–4 minutes per side until a crust forms.

  4. Remove patties from skillet and set aside (they do not need to be fully cooked — they’ll finish in the gravy).

🧅 Step 3: Make the Onion Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, add 2 tablespoons butter.

  2. Sauté sliced onions over medium heat until soft and golden (5–7 minutes).

  3. Sprinkle flour over onions, stirring constantly for 1–2 minutes to cook the flour.

  4. Gradually add beef broth, whisking to remove lumps.

  5. Stir in Worcestershire sauce and season with salt and pepper.

  6. Bring to a gentle simmer; gravy will thicken slightly.

🥘 Step 4: Finish Cooking the Patties
