🐢 Homemade Turtle Candy with Pecans and Caramel

(Buttery, Chewy, Chocolatey – Detailed Step-by-Step Guide)

These classic turtle candies combine toasted pecans, soft chewy caramel, and smooth melted chocolate. They’re perfect for holidays, gifts, or when you want homemade candy-shop quality treats.

🛒 Ingredients (Makes 18–24 turtles)

Base

  • 2 cups pecan halves (about 48–60 halves)

Caramel Layer

  • 1 cup soft caramel candies (about 20–25 pieces)
    OR homemade caramel (recipe below)

  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream

Chocolate Topping

  • 1½ cups semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips

  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil or shortening (optional for shine)

🔥 Step 1: Toast the Pecans (Important for Flavor)

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Spread pecans on baking sheet.

  3. Toast 6–8 minutes until fragrant.

  4. Cool completely.

Toasting enhances nutty flavor and keeps pecans crisp.

🐢 Step 2: Form the “Turtle” Base

  1. Line baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. Arrange 3–4 pecan halves in a cluster (like turtle legs).

  3. Leave space between each cluster.

🍯 Step 3: Melt the Caramel

Using Store-Bought Caramels

  1. Place caramels and heavy cream in microwave-safe bowl.

  2. Heat in 20-second intervals.

  3. Stir between each interval until smooth.

OR
